Bob with his B-17
Based in England, he flew B-17 bombers over Germany in 1944. On his last mission, his plane was shot down.
He tried to get over friendly territory (Holland) before baling out. (They didn't have ejector seats in those days.) But he landed hip-deep in a cabbage field 50 miles from Berlin. The civilians he encountered would have killed him. But an army truck came by and took him to a prison for interrogation.
What followed is another story, but he didn't tell them anything, and they didn't kill him.
