St. Lawerence Island
Bering Straight, Alaska
June 1955 to July 1956

Owen was sent to St. Lawrence Island, Alaska in the middle of the Bering Strait in June 1955. In the U. S. Air Force, his tour of duty on the island was one year.

This picture was taken in the summer soon after he arrived on the island. In the winter, these stairs were burried many feet under the snow.

Although there was plenty of work to be done to keep our defenses strong during the Korean War, there was time to play. In the pictures below, Owen illustrates his new-found skiing skills.

To illustrate the show depth,
he took pictures with his foot on the same fence in the summer and then again in the winter.
