30,000 Spectators View Big Pioneer Day Parade
Winners of the various parade divisions announced during the parade, were as follows:
Adult organizations float (appropriate to theme) - No Man's Land Rifle and Pistol Association, first, with "Return From Adobe Walls," and winners of $75; Beta Tau Chapter of ESA second with "Pioneer Kitchen" and winners of $50; Future Medical Careers Club, third with "Emergency Appendectomy At Home" and recipients of $25.
Junior organizations floats (including high school) - Clover 4-H of Guymon, first with "Pork Plant - Pioneer Style" and winners of $75; Senior High Methodist Youth Fellowship of Guymon, second with a religious theme depicted via large white cross. $50; and Hardesty 4-H, third with "From Tangles to Shocking" depicting barbed wire and electric fence, $25.
Novelty Floats (adult and junior) -TOPS Club of Guymon, first with "Stuff Em In and Trim Em Out," $50; Gamma Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi of Guymon, second, "Return From California," an old car loaded with returning Okies, $35; and third, "Bea's Hill Billy Car" of Elkhart, Kan., $20.
Antique autos - L. D. McEntire of Sweetwater, Okla., first with a Ford Model A roadster $25 and trophy; L.J. Balzer of Hooker, second with a 1929 Ford Model A, $15 and trophy; Glenn $25 and trophy; L.J. Balzer of Hooker, second, with a 1929 Ford Model A. $15 and trophy; Glenn House of Amarillo, Tex., third 1931 Carborlet, $5 and trophy.
Buggies - C. T. Rasco of Pampa, Tex., first, trophy; P.M Hampston of Ulysses, Kan., second, trophy; Joe Eaton of Guymon, third, trophy.
Riding Clubs - Satin and Saddle Riding Club of Dalhart, Tex., $25 and trophy; Point Rock Riders of Elkhart, second, $15 and trophy; Liberal Trail Riders, third, $5 and trophy.
Most typically dressed Pioneer man - Lee Cooper, Jr., of Hardesty, dressed as prospector with mule; first, trophy; Joe Eaton of Guymon, second, trophy; Curtis Landess of Guymon, third, trophy.
Most typically dressed Pioneer woman - Maysie Ashpaugh of Laverne first, trophy; Mina Rinehart of Borger, Tex., second, trophy; and Mrs. Max Clawson of Gruver, third, trophy, all with the Spearman Rolling Plains Mule Train.
Most typically dressed junior cowgirl rider, 12 years and under - Jeanette Smith of Walsenburg, Colo., first, trophy; Rayjean Smith of Walsenburg, Colo., second, trophy; and Pamelita Clawson of Gruver, Tex., third, trophy.
Most typically dressed junior cowboy rider, 12 years and under - Johnny Covalt of Borger, Tex., first trophy; Zane Brewer of Hardesty, second, trophy; and Rodney Dale Clawson of Gruver, third, trophy.
Other outstanding units in the parade included the Khiva Shriners Drum and Bugle Corps of Amarillo; the OSU Angel Flight; the Hooker Youth Revival float "The Heritage of Eternal Peace;" the Kwahadi Indian Dancers of Amarillo; the Guymon Girl Scouts float "Plains Indians;" Apostolic Church log church, the Eta Beta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority's "Hot Doggie; " the Rolling Plains Mule Train; the Guymon DeMolay's "Oklahoma Land Run;" the Guymon Senior 4-H "Box Supper;" the Entre Nous's "The Attic - Memories of Yesteryears;" Guymon Junior High Library's "Old Time Fun;" and rid-ing groups from Guymon, Boys Town, Dalhart, Goodwell, Texhoma, Elkhart, Liberal, Canadian and Meade.
Bands and musical groups participating in the parade included the "Pride of Guymon," GHS Marching Band; Guymon Junior High Band, Sixth Grade Band, and Grade School Band; Yarbrough High School; Rolla, Kan.; Campo, Colo.; Sing Out Panhandle; and the Panhandle State College ROTC Band.
In addition to the floats, riding clubs and bands, there was also a lot of parade royalty including 0. W. Tyler, Sr., Parade Marshall; Mrs. Myrtle Salter Roach, Pioneer Queen; Deanna Livesay and runners-up, Pioneer Day Parade Queen; Miss Ford Country, Darolyn Butler of Pauls Valley; Miss Guymon, Connie Worley and runners-up Terri Wadley, Jane Mayer, Becky Cole and Carol Craig; Honorary Kaydettes of the PSC ROTC, Lois Freeman, Karen Woods, Cathy Gibson, Leslie Schaufer and Ebbie Smith; Little Miss Hardesty, Linda Nickelson; Little Miss Beaver, Rozelle Aldrich; and Evelyn Reust, TOPS Queen.
