If you could follow this little valley just a little way, you'd come to a bay of the Sea of Corinth — which connects to the Ionian Sea east of Italy. So even though this site is a long way from Athens and across some good sized mountains, Delphi was very accessible by ship, the major mode of transportation.
I believe in the Oracle, don't you?
The story goes that Aesop, of fable fame, came to Delphi.
After hearing from the Oracle, he let be known rather widely that the Oracle's pronouncements were so much nonsense. Well, the inhabitants of Delphi didn't take kindly to that sort of talk and took him to the top of the mountain at the right side of this photo and threw him off the cliff. He's buried around there somewhere.
So, now you know that it's a good idea to believe in the Oracle, and what happened to Aesop.
