The Road to Fira

If you'll look real close at those brown piles left of the road, you can determine that they are actually grape vines. They are very unusual to Americans because this isn't the way we grow grapes at all; but, they are familiar because that is the form we buy from craft stores as foundations for our wreaths! On Santorini they grow their grapes twined in circles on the ground to for two reasons. The ground hugging form has less surface area exposed to the dehydrating winds, and it is also in position to utilize any moisture that is present in the ground. I'll never look at another grape-vine door wreath without thinking of beautiful Santorini.
