The Azores
Pineapple Plantation, São Miguel Island
Day 8: Monday, April 18, 2005
Growing pineapples is a bit labor-intensive.
Irrigation water storage — Can we call this a reservoir?
This picture shows most of the plantation. There is a row of several greenhouses up the stairs and behind the lattice on the left. And there is a larger greenhouse with a capacity of 2000 plants at the end of the walkway. All together the plantation with its visitor center probably doesn't occupy more than 2 or 3 acres. They are probably making a good income even before considering the added cash flow from giving tours to tourist groups.
Wisteria in bloom
Yum, yum! Here's some almost ready to be harvested.
It's 11:30 AM, about time for us to head back to the ship.
