The Arch Of Constantine
Ernst Meyer Stands Near the Arch
The arch was decreed by the Sanate and the People of Rome after the General's victory over the Emperor Maxentius in 312 AD. It is the largest and best-preserved of the arches in Rome. The arch features statues of barbarian prisoners at the top of the columns which are from the time of Trajan. Other embellishments come from different eras. For a sense of scale, you can see the heads of some people in the central arch,
if you look carefully.

We didn't actually realize it at the time, but this is the way to the Forum. We were supposed to go there, but probably due to the suffocating crowds that awaited us at the Vatican because of the election of the new pope, we didn't get to go to the Forum.
This was a huge disappointment.
